Clinical Practica

PracitiumExperience in conducting psychotherapy and clinical assessment is achieved through 6 semesters of required practicum placements, completed during the second, third, and fourth years of training. On average, students spend 10-12 hours per week in their practica settings. Psychological Services Center
Second year health clinical students complete their first practicum assignment at the Department's Psychological Services Center, which offers services to the community on a sliding fee basis. Department of Psychology faculty supervise students in evidence-based psychotherapy with adults and children. In addition to individual therapy, the opportunity to gain experience leading group therapy is also available. During this placement, health students also conduct psychoeducational and psychological assessments with adolescents and adults. Specialty clinic rotations with patients with medical illness may be also available.

Health Practica Placements
 
Third and fourth year students complete their health-focused practica at the Miami Veterans Affairs Healthcare System, the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and the Memorial Cancer Center. In these settings, students develop therapy, assessment, and/or consultation expertise with medical patients and as members of interdisciplinary health care teams.

University of Miami Miller School of Medicine
The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine offers practica opportunities in the Department of Neurology, the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, and, for students interested in pediatric health, the Department of Pediatrics. Practica options include:

Adolescent medicine
Neuropsychology assessment
Therapy services for oncology outpatients
Transplantation assessment

Memorial Cancer Institute
Practicum students at Memorial Cancer Institute is at the Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, FL and Memorial West in Pembroke Pines, FL. 
This site serves cancer patients and aims to decrease distress throughout treatment.
